Home Journals are coming home today!  Here is the web that we created to help us write them: We had an awesome presentation from the Earth Rangers today, which really tied in to what we have been learning in Science.  Here is the website if you would like to take a look, or if your child would like to become an "Earth Ranger": https://www.earthrangers.com/ We are thinking of going for a community walk next Wednesday, November 1st, or Thursday, November 2nd, and need some volunteers.  If you are available for one or both days, please email clwillis@cbe.ab.ca.  Thank you in advance! Some notes about Halloween: - students are invited to wear a costume after lunch, so they shouldn't come to school dressed up - costumes should not include masks that restrict vision, complicated make-up, weapons, or be too scary - we will be having a costume parade in the afternoon and students are welcome to bring a decorated or carved pumpkin that they can carry with them du...
What we have been working on: - Humanities: We have finished reading the book "Fatty Legs".  Students have been working on their comprehension of the book by sketching, making connections, asking questions, and paying particular attention to the characters in the book.  We have also been doing writing using the Six Thinking Hats.  The next step will be for students to take on the persona of one of the characters in the book and do some persuasive writing from that character's perspective.  For example, they may write as Olemaun and be trying to convince her parents to let her go to the school, or they may write as Olemaun's father trying to convince her not to go to the school. - Social Studies: We are wrapping up the infographics about the regions of Alberta and all six will be due by next Tuesday, October 31st.  Students have created a checklist that they are using to help them guide their work. - Math: We continue to do How Many Ways every Tuesday and T...

The Cardboard Challenge and The Jacket Racket

Tomorrow we will be participating in the Cardboard Challenge.  Here is the link to the website: https://cardboardchallenge.com/ Students have been given the challenge of building something that is functional and practical with the primary building material being cardboard.  Students have been working in groups and have come up with plans.  If they wish, they can bring in cardboard and any other materials that they require for their plan.  Here is a message from the Leadership Group about the Jacket Racket: Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization with the goal of ensuring that every child from Kindergarten to Grade 12 has a warm winter coat to wear to school.   90% of donations come from schools. The jackets are then distributed to children in schools where there is a need.   This year we are inviting our students and parents to participate in a coat drive for Jacket Racket.  They  accept gently used  warm  winter coats, s...
Highlights - In Humanities we have finished up our Wacky Web Tales and have started reading the book "Fatty Legs", which is the true story of an eight year old Inuit girl's experience at a residential school.  We will be examining the book from the different perspectives of the characters.  We are also continuing our work around the geographic regions of Alberta.  Students have done infographics for the Canadian Shield and Boreal Forest, and are now looking at the Parkland. - In Math we are continuing to look at rounding as a form of estimating and mental math.  In Grade 4, students should know how to round to the nearest ten thousands place.  Students will do a quick Take 5 on Thursday to see how well they are understanding these concepts. - We have been making comic strips in French to demonstrate our understanding of greetings.  Any students who were not finished after yesterday's class should have brought it home for homework.  The comic stri...
