Happy Friday!!

Here is the learning web that we constructed today to help us write our Home Journals.


Please take a look at the Home Journal, sign it, and send it back to school for Monday.  In the Home Journal I have also included a paragraph with my feedback regarding the autobiography project.

A big part of our focus this week was the persuasive essay writing.  We backed things up a couple of steps and started to look at things piece by piece.  Students chose their own topic and completed the "Persuasion Map" to help organize their opinions and reasons.  We then took a close look at how to write a good opening paragraph.  Here are some samples of what was written:

Have you ever heard of NHL?  If you don’t know, the NHL is the National Hockey League and I am
going to tell you about one of the best teams in the NHL.  I feel that the Winnipeg Jets are one of the
best teams.  You might be asking how can I be so sure, well I will tell you.  We have beat the two
best teams in the NHL, Tampa Bay and the Vegas Golden Knights.  

Hey, have you heard of Raina Telgemeier?  If you have not, today I am going to tell you all about her.
 I believe that Raina Telgemeier is the best author in the world.  Why?  Because she wrote the books
“Smile” and “The Babysitter’s Club” series.
Have you ever wondered what animal is the best animal?  Is the giraffe the best?  Well, it is not!
 Cats are the best animal, do you know why?

Have you ever thought what trouble you will have as soon as you grow up?  Well, I will tell you that
growing up is not fun.  I do have a few reasons why.  I hope that you think growing up is horrible
after this.  Come and find out why growing up is horrible.  

Do you like unicorns?  I DO!  I think they are the most magical animals ever!  They’re magic, they
have a special shield called “The Shield of Boringness”, which they remain a myth behind, and they
are real, if you believe.

Scientist in the Classroom and Field Trip

We had a fantastic morning learning all about plants and photosynthesis.  Scientist in the Classroom Penny was our guest and she had us dissect a flower to show the different parts, took us through an experiment that showed how photosynthesis occurred, stations that taught us all about plants, and even showed us how they recycle paper!!  We are very excited for our field trip to Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park tomorrow, and we’re sure it will be a fantastic day of learning!   It is forecast to be a beautiful day, with a day-time high of 25ºC.   Students will be outside for most of the day, travelling around the park.   With this in mind, please send your child with: -        a backpack -        light layers that can easily be removed and packed away inside a backpack.   It will likely be cooler in the morning and warm up as the day goes on. -  ...

Happy Friday! I hope that everyone is managing to stay warm and doing their best to enjoy snowmageddon :). Here is our learning web for this week: Upcoming Important Dates and Reminders: - Every Thursday is our Home Reading and Learning Commons book exchange. - Next Thursday and Friday (February 15th and 16th) is Teachers' Convention, so there is no school for students - Monday February 19th is Family Day, there is no school. - Mr. Barker returns on Tuesday February 20th for the second half of his practicum.  - The Cultural Games unit will begin on Monday. - Friday February 23rd is our next Fun Lunch and Flex Friday.

Just Keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming!

We are going swimming and forms are coming home today! We will be going June 11-14th, 18th, and 19th.  We will leave the school at 9:20 am and will return around 11:15 am.  Please fill out the regular field trip forms, as well as the Swimming Ability form for your child, and return to the school by this Friday, June 1st.   We will also need two volunteers for the trip.  If you are available for some, or all, of the days, and have your volunteer clearance, please email me at clwillis@cbe.ab.ca. Other Important Dates for this Week: - Drum Fit will continue all this week with Mrs. Buonomo and Mrs. Fraser. - Regular book exchange will be this Thursday (last day to take out books from the Learning Commons is June 8th) - Friday June 1st - Swimming field trip forms are due - Friday June 1st - Scholastic Book Orders are due (this will be the final book order of the school year).
